Paper Birds

A couple of weeks ago, I sat down (while watching Titanic for the first time. So good) and worked on this drawing. The background is a splotch wash with watercolors and white tempera paint on the non-glossy side of photo paper. Yeah... I was out of thick paper. I use watercolors with my little bottle of watered-down white tempera for a lot of my projects. The envelope I modeled mine after is really cool! I found in my stationary box. It's from Egypt -note the hieroglyphics- from when my mom was a kid. I'm assuming she got it when she lived in Africa, but I could be wrong. We have a bunch of random foreign stuff like that on our house. Also an important fact: I ruined one of my Prismacolor markers on this thing. I will miss my 10% Warm Grey for a long time to come:(
This picture is kind of an ode to Erin's letter-writing. I miss California like crazy and I'm dying to go back. Being able to write to Erin has actually made me feel much better, like people haven't quite forgotten me yet. In the least cheesy way possible, it kind of feels like part of me gets to be in the Bay Area too. Like little paper-bird-me's. So thanks, Erin.

  1. Sorry! I didn't mean to leave this post in neglect. I love that piece, I really do. I've started painting again too, and I'll be sure to post up my monochrome project (I used shades of red-orange) momentarily.

Thanks for writing back, Hali. I suppose I should hope to it in my writing.
